My prayers and deepest sympathy go out to the family of Larry Bierl, who died of hypothermia in a bus shelter, and the daughter whose mother ended her life by stepping in front of a train.
I lost my one and only sister on her 72nd birthday last year to alcoholism and drug addiction. The last four years were difficult. Many times, I tried to get her help, only to hear that she did not want help, so there was nothing they could do.
We came from a loving and caring family, my sister would always say, “family is forever.” At the end her family did not exist. Her new family was alcohol and drugs.
I ask myself, who suffers more, the person with mental illness, or the family members who love them and want to help, but cannot because of the courts?
It is time for a change in our legal system. All lives do matter.
