Douglas C. Nicholson, who retired last year after 23 years as a City of Lockport firefighter, announced Saturday he is running for alderman at large on the Democratic ticket this year.

The incumbent Republican, former Police Chief Lawrence M. Eggert, was not on the list of candidates endorsed last week by the Niagara County GOP. Chairman Richard L. Andres Jr. said Eggert is "on the fence" about running again.

Nicholson, 58, an Air Force veteran, said his years in the Fire Department gave him a close-up look at "the problems with city government."

"I think last year’s mayoral election started to change that and we are starting to see a better city. I want to help move that along," he said.
