Gill to retire as Lancaster police chief

Lancaster Town Board members will meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday to interview candidates for police chief.

Chief Gerald J. Gill Jr., 57, who has served on the village and town police departments for more than 30 years, is retiring Thursday.

There are five candidates on the civil service list, and the board will interview the top three candidates, Supervisor Johanna M. Coleman said. If one of the top three does not wish to be considered, the board will interview the next person on the list. All the candidates are current police officers who currently hold supervisory duties, she said.

In his resignation letter, Gill endorsed Capt. Marco Laurienzo to succeed him.

Coleman said the board will probably appoint an acting or permanent chief at its meeting Monday.
