Numerous schools in Erie County and around the region are closing Monday because of the lingering effects of the severe windstorm that has lashed the region.
Buffalo Public Schools announced at about 9:20 p.m. Sunday that they would close the next day, although central office staff are directed to report. A statement on Twitter said two transportation terminals that hold one-third of the district's bus fleet are without power.

Also, Williamsville Central Schools, Amherst Central Schools, Sweet Home Central Schools, Ken-Ton Schools, Lancaster Central Schools, Cheektowaga Central Schools, Cheektowaga-Sloan Schools, Cleveland Hill Schools, Maryvale Schools, Niagara Wheatfield Schools, Clarence Central Schools, Depew Schools, Tonawanda City Schools, West Seneca Central Schools, Hamburg Schools, Niagara Falls Schools, Lockport City Schools, North Tonawanda City Schools, Lackawanna City Schools, Akron Central Schools, Alden Central Schools, Grand Island Central Schools and Oakfield-Alabama Central Schools said they won't open Monday.
Grand Island also is canceling Monday's School Board meeting, but the boys' championship hockey game will take place as scheduled at HarborCenter.
In addition, a number of charter, private and religious schools are closed. They include: Aloma D. Johnson Charter School, Amherst Christian Academy, Autism Services School in Amherst and Buffalo, Baker Victory Services Academy, Bishop Timon/St. Jude, Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School, all Diocese of Buffalo elementary schools, Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart, Buffalo Collegiate Charter School, Buffalo United Charter School, Canisius High School, Cardinal O'Hara School, Charter School for Applied Technologies, Charter School for Inquiry, Christ the King School, Elmwood Village Charter School, Enterprise Charter School, Global Concepts Charter School, Kadimah Academy, Nardin Academy, Our Lady of Victory School, Saints Peter and Paul School in Williamsville, St. Christopher's School, St. Gregory the Great School, St. Mary's School in Swormville and The Park School.

Buffalo Public Schools so far remain open Monday. Mayor Byron Brown said early Sunday evening that district officials haven't notified the city of a closing.
