Open-government group wants wider search for water commissioner

The Buffalo Niagara Coalition for Open Government wants the Erie County Legislature to extend the deadline for Erie County Water Authority commissioner applications and to broaden the search.

Water Authority Chairman Jerome Schad is seeking reappointment to the board. He was under heavy fire last year as the sole remaining commissioner who was on the board when it was accused of violating numerous transparency and good-governance policies. Since then, Schad, the Amherst Democratic Party chairman, has led a number of transparency reforms and survived some legislators' efforts to fire him.

The Legislature did not widely advertise for applicants to fill the post. The only other  applicant is North Buffalo lawyer Peter Reese, a Democratic committee member whose resume touts his knowledge of election and open-government law.
