Grand Island man shot twice while trying to purchase pot in Niagara Falls

A Grand Island man was shot twice Saturday afternoon while trying to purchase marijuana in a high-crime neighborhood, Niagara Falls Police said.

Garvin L. Hegwood, 23, of Stony Point Road, told police that while he and a friend were waiting in a car to make the purchase at 18th and Niagara streets at 3 p.m., a black man climbed into the rear passenger seat, displayed a handgun and demanded money. Hegwood told police he handed over $130, but the man shot him before fleeing on foot.

Hegwood drove himself to nearby Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center with wounds to the left leg and lower abdomen and was treated in the emergency room. There was no information on his condition Sunday. An investigation is continuing.
