Flash flood warning issued for Grand Island, Tonawandas due to ice build-up in Niagara River

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Grand Island and areas along the Niagara River in the Tonawandas shortly after 6 p.m. due to ice jams in the river.

The warning noted that officials at the Niagara Power Project had reported flash flooding in North Tonawanda.

Affected areas are expected to include areas around Sawyer, River and Ferry roads, as well as River Lea Drive, the Weather Service said, adding that ice is expected to keep building in the area overnight and may cause ice floe damage along the shore.
