Threatening weather leads to rescheduling of Sunday's hockey finals, girls basketball slate

With Sunday’s weather forecast calling for severe winds, gusting to 75 mph, and government officials advising no unnecessary travel, the high school hockey and basketball slate has been canceled.

Super Sunday hockey games at KeyBank Center featuring the Monsignor Martin Niagara Cup and Section VI Division I and II championship games will now be played Monday night at Harborcenter with the Niagara Cup kicking off the tripleheader at 4:25 p.m. That game features St. Joe's against defending champion St. Mary's.

The Section VI Division II small schools final follows at 6:40 featuring defending champion West Seneca West against Grand Island. The Division I final featuring defending champion Niagara Wheatfield against first-time finalist Orchard Park is slated for an 8:55 p.m. start.

Meanwhile, the Federation girls hockey final between Frontier/Lake Shore/Orchard Park and Lancaster/Iroquois/Depew also won’t be played Sunday at Harborcenter. Section VI chairman Rick Hopkins is working on a date with Harborcenter to reschedule the contest.

The Monsignor Martin girls basketball semifinal quadruple-header at Villa Maria will now be played over the course of two days. The Class A semis double-header starts at 6 p.m. Monday with Mount St. Mary facing Nardin followed by Sacred Heart vs. Mt. Mercy. The small schools semifinals twin bill starts at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Villa.
