The project of turning the South Park Arboretum back into a fully functioning arboretum, while also building a new state-of-the-art Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course, is exciting news for Buffalo.
In Kevin Gaughan’s recent article in The Buffalo News, a clear case was made for the re-interpreted use of both the current golf course/arboretum and nearby land. Olmsted was a visionary in his day, and part of that vision was to imagine that people can make drastic changes to improve natural lands that are in urban settings.
Gaughan’s proposal reflects that type of visionary leadership.
Imagine a trip to the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens including a leisurely stroll and picnic through the adjacent arboretum.
That combined with a nearby golf course that supports and grows the educational and economic opportunities of Buffalo’s youth represent wonderful opportunities to pursue.
I hope that Buffalo’s political and business leaders help bring this project into existence.
