Bishop Richard Malone to sit out St. Patrick's Day parade

Bishop Richard J. Malone announced on the Buffalo Diocese website Friday that he will not march in next month's St. Patrick's Day parade up Delaware Avenue.

The bishop has been criticized over his and the diocese's handling of child sex abuse allegations that go back decades.

"To prevent the Saint Patrick's Day Parade from being used a platform to address unrelated issues — however important those issues may be — Bishop Malone, with immense regret, has decided not to march in the parade this year," the statement read.

Malone does plan to preside over the feast of St. Patrick's Day Mass at 10:30 a.m. March 17 in St. Joseph Cathedral, the statement read.

According to the statement, the bishop selected Rev. David Richards, chaplain of the United Irish-American Association, to replace him in the parade.
