UB football opens 2019 MAC schedule Sept. 28 at Miami (Ohio)

The University at Buffalo football team will open its MAC schedule Sept. 28 at Miami (Ohio).

The MAC announced home and away dates for its 2019 conference games for each off its 12 teams on Wednesday. MAC officials said television times and platforms for its games will be announced either in late May or early June for the first three weeks of the regular season and midweek games in November. All other game kickoff times and television platforms will be announced 12 days prior to the scheduled game.

The Bulls have two midweek games on the schedule that was released Wednesday: Nov. 14 at Kent State, which is a Thursday, and Nov. 20 against Toledo, which is a Wednesday.

UB's MAC home opener and its homecoming is Oct. 5 against Ohio at UB Stadium, which MAC officials said was UB’s primary protected date request for a home game. The game against Ohio is the first of four conference home games for the Bulls.

UB will host Central Michigan on Oct. 26, Toledo on Nov. 20 and Bowling Green on Nov. 29.

In addition to its MAC opener at Miami, the Bulls will play three more road games: at Akron on Oct. 19, at Eastern Michigan on Nov. 2 and at Kent State on Nov. 14.

UB has a bye Oct. 12, and has a 12-day gap between games in early November, the result of a shift by the MAC to a 14-week schedule. A 14-week schedule means there are no games that are five days apart; UB's smallest window between games is six days.

The 14-week schedule, MAC deputy commissioner/chief operating officer Bob Gennarelli said, allows a smoother transition into the mid-week schedule, which begins Nov. 5.

UB also plays in a Saturday game in November for the first time since 2016, when it plays Nov. 2 at Eastern Michigan. It's one of five Saturday games in November, a month that's typically known for MAC mid-week games. A sixth Saturday game could also be added to the 2019 schedule; Miami at Ball State is currently scheduled for Nov. 29 and could move to Saturday, Nov. 30, pending a national television opportunity.

"I don't know if there was any change of philosophy," MAC commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said Wednesday. "We like Saturday games, but we like our mid-week November games.

"When we have the opportunity, we like to put the rivalry games on Saturdays, but by the same token, when they're attractive to the TV partners, they're going to go with those, as well."

The MAC Championship game is scheduled for Dec. 7 at Ford Field in Detroit.

The Bulls open the 2019 schedule Aug. 31 with a nonconference game against Robert Morris at UB Stadium. UB plays Sept. 7 at Penn State, Sept. 14 at Liberty, and hosts Temple on Sept. 21.

  • Oct. 19 at Akron
  • Oct. 26 vs. Central Michigan
  • Nov. 2 at Eastern Michigan
