Town of Niagara quadruples fee for unpaid water, sewer accounts

TOWN OF NIAGARA – The administrative fee charged for unpaid sewer and water accounts has been increased from $25 to $100.

The Town Board approved the move Tuesday following a public hearing that drew no audience comments.

Water and Sewer Superintendent Steve Roberts told the board at a previous work session that some home owners will intentionally not pay the charges. The charges are sent to the Niagara County Real Property Tax Office for collection. At the end of the year, the county sends the homeowner’s mortgage company an account of the total taxes and charges.

Homeowners would then deduct that total amount, which is not itemized, on their federal and state income tax returns as property taxes paid.

The new fee goes into effect immediately.
