Tonawanda to lease former elementary school for town youth programs

The Town of Tonawanda will lease a former elementary school for the use of its youth programs.

The town will pay $60,000 per year for the old Thomas Jefferson Elementary School at 250 Athens Blvd., under a 10-year lease approved by the Town Board and the Ken-Ton School Board.

Jefferson Elementary School closed in 2013. The school district has used it for storage and has hosted police training there but never put the building up for sale.

Town Board member Daniel Crangle said the former school promises more space, along with an auditorium and gym, for the 100-member Kids Club school-year program and summer camp now offered by the Youth, Parks and Recreation Department in Mang Park's Kenmore Youth Center.

The Kids Club program should move by March 4.
