Buffalo Soup-Fest announces 2019 winners for 13 categories

More than 5,500 people navigated the second floor of the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center Sunday to warm their stomachs at Buffalo Soup-Fest, sampling spicy, savory and sweet soups in order to narrow-down winners in several categories.

Matt Carlucci, co-founder of Buffalo Soup-Fest, announced the full list of winners, 11 of which were voted on by the public, with their brick-and-mortar addresses.

Foodies' Choice: Joe's Deli, three locations: 1322 Hertel Ave.; 714 Maple Road, Williamsville; 818 Ellicott St. in Oshei Children's Hospital.

This award was chosen by a panel of judges, with no public input.

Best in City: Fat Bob's Smokehouse, 41 Virginia Place.

Best in 'Burbs: 773 North, 2749 Grand Island Blvd., Grand Island.

Best Buffalo-style: Danny's, 3715 Genesee St., Cheektowaga; 4300 Abbott Road, Orchard Park.

Danny's original Buffalo chicken wing soup has won several times in the past and was featured in "8 soups to try at Soup-Fest."

Best Spicy: Lenox Grill, 140 North St.

Most Unique: Ms. Judi's Food Truck

Jjigae, a spicy Korean stew, and a vegetarian health soup with Asian greens, ginger and garlic were the two offerings from Ms. Judi's.

Best Meat: Alleyway Bistro, 174 Orchard Park Road, West Seneca.

Bacon cheeseburger and creamy Reuben were Alleyway's two meat soups.

Best Veggies: Seneca Niagara Casino, 310 4th St., Niagara Falls.

Best Seafood: Winfield's Pub, 1213 Ridge Road, Lackawanna.

Winfield's fish fry soup - with cream of fresh cod, housemade slaw and tartar sauce, and PBR-battered crisps - triumphed here.

Best Chili: Soho, 64 W. Chippewa St.

The downtown bar-restaurant's white-bean chicken chili took the crown.

Best Ethnic: Water Lily Cafe, 3800 Union Road, Cheektowaga.

Khao Soi, a Northern Thai curry soup, and the classic combination of ginger, chicken and rice with Thai spices contributed.

Best Newcomer: Penny Lane Cafe, 10255 Main St., Clarence.

The Clarence business offered CBD oil as a one-ticket addition to its Magic Mushroom soup.

Best Beer-Based Soup: East Eden Tavern, 8163 E. Eden Road, Eden.

Yelp's Choice Award: East Eden Tavern

East Eden was the only restaurant to win two awards at the 2019 festival. Its creamy dill pickle with pork was among the standouts, and its smoked, beer-braised brisket soup was the one of three entries at Soup-Fest to include beer.
