Passenger killed in one-car collision in Gerry

A Cattaraugus County man died Friday in a one-car crash in Chautauqua County, according to the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office.

Paul R. Newell, 43, of Coldspring, a passenger in the vehicle, was partially ejected from the vehicle when deputies arrived on the scene at 11:21 a.m. on Gerry-Ellington Road in Gerry, the Sheriff's Office said.

Paul Newell was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The operator of the vehicle, James A. Newell, 41, also of Coldspring, had to be extricated from the wreckage, according to the Sheriff's Office. James Newell was transported by the Gerry Volunteer Fire Department to a nearby landing zone and airlifted by medevac to UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa., for serious but not life-threatening injuries, the Sheriff's Office said.

An investigation was ongoing and charges may be pending based on the outcome, according to the Sheriff's Office.
