The owner of Schuele Paint and Ace Hardware stores on Summer Street got a green light from the city's Planning and Preservation boards for his proposal to construct a one-story addition to the hardware store to allow more space for the retail business.
Paul Leahey wants to take down an old greenhouse at 85 Linwood Ave. – on a lot adjacent to his business – and replace it with the addition to the store at 22 Summer.
Plans for the $300,000 project call for more merchandise aisles in the new space as well as some outdoor retail.
The new construction would use the same brick and aluminum storefront glass system to match the existing building. The parking lot on the rest of the Linwood property would remain.
Leahey plans to open up the side facade of 12 Summer – the paint store – and install a storefront entry there that matches the hardware store.
The Preservation Board approved the changes last week, while the Planning Board backed a zoning map amendment Monday to enable the change.
