Rezoning paves way for $13 million Amherst senior housing project

The Amherst Town Board voted 5-0 to approve the required rezoning for a developer's planned $13.1 million conversion of the St. Mary of the Angels regional house into senior housing.

Tzetzo Cos. intends to buy the residence at 201 Reist St. and perform interior work boosting the number of units from 73 to 99, while allowing the 62 nuns living there now to stay.

The Amherst Planning Board in October had recommended granting the rezoning, but the Town Board had repeatedly delayed a vote in the face of neighborhood opposition.

At a special meeting Friday night, Tzetzo worked to win over neighbors and the Town Board, which placed numerous restrictions on future development at the site. They include limits on the height and size of construction and requirements to preserve green space.
