Insect damage to trees in Olcott park triggers public meeting

Niagara County and Town of Newfane officials will present a tree protection and reseeding plan for Olcott's Krull Park at a public meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Olcott Fire Company, 1691 Lockport-Olcott Road.

In his State of the County address last month, County Legislature Chairman W. Keith McNall said the ash borer has had a devastating effect on parks.

Last June, the county spent $12,000 to have Davey Resource Group of Kent, Ohio, analyze the condition of some 2,500 trees in Krull Park. Its plan calls for removal of dead or dying trees, a reforestation program and a long-term maintenance program.

Public Works Director Garret Meal said the cost of the work is undetermined. The county will seek state grants to extend the effort to four other parks.
