Former Alice's Kitchen in Amherst eyed for demolition, reuse

A signature landmark in Amherst may soon come down.

No, not the big blue water tower; that old building with the purple roof.

The former Alice's Kitchen is a target of demolition by Benderson Development Co., which bought the 2.36-acre property at 3122 Sheridan Drive, at Alberta Drive, in January 2012 when the restaurant closed.

The developer has filed plans with the town showing it would replace the long-vacant Alice's Kitchen with a new, 8,155-square-foot structure for an unnamed restaurant and retailer. Benderson would keep an existing, 17,100-square-foot building on the same property that has hosted medical office tenants.

Benderson is seeking variances from the town zoning code for parking setback, parking spaces and landscaping. The town Zoning Board of Appeals will consider the request at its Feb. 19 meeting.
