When Cheektowaga's newest snowplow rolls past, it will carry a message about mental health and suicide prevention.
The purple and turquoise tandem-blade plow truck is accented with semicolons and the message "your story isn't over yet," said Supervisor Diane Benczkowski, who lost a daughter to suicide in 2017. Phone numbers for suicide prevention hotlines (716-834-3131) are on the back of the plow truck.
The town also has vehicles with messages designed to raise public awareness about cancer and autism. The fleet has created a stir on the streets of Cheektowaga, said Mark Wegner, highway superintendent.
“People are always honking their horns and giving a thumbs-up,” he said. “The reaction to the autism truck surprised me. I didn’t realize autism was so prevalent.”
