Thomas twins from St. Francis win state Catholic mat titles

Twin brothers Nolan and Dominik Thomas of St. Francis won individual weight class titles on Sunday at the State Catholic High School wrestling championships at Holy Trinity in Hicksville on Long Island.

Dominik won his third straight CHSAA title, when he pinned Marty Jensen of Kellenberg Memorial in the second period of their championship match at 182 pounds.

Dominik was voted Most Outstanding Wrestler for the second time in three years and will make his third appearance of his career in the state meet this weekend in Albany. He has a 221-51 career record and a 44-2 mark for the season.

Nolan Thomas won at 220 pounds with a third period pin over George Speres of Fordham Prep. It was his 150th career match. Nolan has a 51-1 record entering the Federation tournament.

The Thomases led St. Francis to 180.5 points, fourth overall in the tournament and No. 1 in Division 2 of the CHSAA. St. Francis also won the Team Sportsmanship Award.

The Red Raiders were among five Monsignor Martin teams to compete in the state CHSAA meet.

Besides the Thomas twins, five other Monsignor Martin wrestlers made it to the finals. They were:

Ronnie Jones (145), Sullivan Walsh (170), Matt Werts (195) and Caleb Lesswing of St. Joe's and Matt Baldwin (152) of Canisius.

Among the third-place finishers were Logan Lauck (113) and Jack Gordon (145) of St. Francis, Charles Morrison (220) of St. Joe's and Trevor Sheehan (126) of St. Mary's of Lancaster.

St. Anthony's led the overall scoring with 303 points. Chaminade was second with 254.5, followed by Kellenberg Memorial 184.5, St. Francis 180.5, Monsignor Farrell of Staten Island 172 and St. Joe's 157.5. Canisius was ninth with 76.5.

Mount Mercy wins first All-Catholic bowling title

Mount Mercy won the team championship of the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association girls bowling tournament for the first time on Friday at Classic Lanes.

The Magic won by nine pins over Mount St. Mary, the regular season league champion. Senior Samantha Batchev of Mount Mercy was the Most Valuable Player in the tournament. Other Mount Mercy team members are: Olivia Coleman, Allison Mazurkiewicz, Allysyn Pajek and Bridget Whelan.
