Policeman and MMA fighter aims for Niagara County Legislature seat

North Tonawanda Police Officer Erik A. Herbert, who has an 8-2 record as a pro mixed martial arts fighter, announced last week he is running for the 7th District seat in the Niagara County Legislature, which  represents northern North Tonawanda and much of Wheatfield.

Herbert, 32, a member of the Independence Party running with Democratic backing, would face Jesse P. Gooch, a Republican appointed Jan. 2 after Legislator Kathryn L. Lance resigned. Herbert also sought the seat. Legislator Jason A. Zona, the county Democratic chairman, said the GOP-controlled search committee actually rated him higher than Gooch.

Herbert served in the Marine Corps from 2004 to 2008 and was a guard in the Marine One presidential helicopter unit.

Herbert joined the North Tonawanda Police Department in 2013 and won its Life Saving Award in 2017 for saving a choking six-week-old infant.
