Lancaster officials gearing up for $2.5 million West Main extension

Lancaster village officials hope to launch their search by the end of the month for an engineering firm to guide a $2.5 million construction project to extend West Main Street.

The Empire State Development grant will fund the planning, design, engineering and construction of the extension from its current terminus to Pleasant Avenue, said Trustee Lynne Ruda.

“It will be some time before we see a road, and the developer can’t start building without it," said Ruda.

Extending West Main is critical to the long-awaited development of a 4.4.-acre parcel in downtown Lancaster, officials said.

The mix of boutiques, restaurants and up to 48 mid-range to upscale apartments was proposed by businessman Tommy R. Sweeney. The $15 million mixed-use development could end the village’s 40-year quest to jump-start its central business district.
