Man accused of placing fake bombs faces new charge

A Buffalo man accused of staging a pipe bomb hoax is facing a new charge tied to his unauthorized departure from an inpatient treatment program at the Buffalo Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Already charged with placing fake bombs outside a police station and post office in South Buffalo in October, James Timpanaro, 54, now also faces a contempt of court charge.

U.S. Magistrate Judge H. Kenneth Schroeder Jr. had previously ordered Timpanaro to undergo psychiatric and alcohol evaluation but on Tuesday ordered him detained.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Joel L. Violanti said Timpanaro, who has a history of mental health and substance abuse problems, left the VA's inpatient program on Saturday. He was apprehended the next day by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force.
