Amherst touts enhanced STAR for 65-year-old homeowners

The Town of Amherst says there's one good thing about getting older – you could be in line for a bigger exemption on your school taxes.

Homeowners who turned 65 in 2018 or who are turning 65 anytime this year could be eligible for an enhanced STAR exemption on their school tax bill that more than doubles the amount of the basic STAR exemption. The homeowner must currently have basic STAR that was registered with the town prior to 2015.

For more information, call the Town Assessor's Office at 631-7038 or stop by Town Hall, 5583 Main St., Williamsville.

Homeowners need to bring: a copy of their 2017 1040 IRS return or, if they're not tax filers, copies of their 2017 1099, a driver's license or birth certificate for proof of age.

The deadline is March 1.
