An Allegany County man was arrested Monday on charges of first-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child after a 1-year-old child was taken to the hospital with "significant head injuries," state police said Tuesday.
Authorities said Shane E. Kranock, 25, of Belmont was "under the influence of heroin at the time of the incident," state police said in a statement.
On Monday, troopers and state police investigators responded to Jones Memorial Hospital regarding the baby. Because of the seriousness of the injury, the child was then transported to Golisano Children's Hospital in Rochester.
Investigators said Kranock "might have dropped the child after changing a diaper."
"Though some of the injuries could have been incurred by a fall, the child’s injuries are not exclusively from just a fall. Kranock was under the influence of heroin at the time of the incident," state police said.
Kranock was taken to state police barracks in Amity and arraigned in Belmont Village Court. He was remanded to Allegany County Jail in lieu of $100,000 cash bail or $200,000 bond.
Allegany Child Protective Services was contacted.
State police said the child was in guarded condition "with possible significant brain injury."
