A celebration of the 40th anniversary of Eva M. Doyle's "Eye On History" column will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Frank E. Merriweather Jr. Library, 1324 Jefferson Ave.
The column, which began in the Challenger in February 1979 and now runs in the Buffalo Criterion, focuses on little-known facts about black history, such as the only black family on the Titanic or the black woman who lived in the Lincoln White House. Doyle, a retired Buffalo Public Schools teacher, also writes a weekly column for The Buffalo News during Black History Month.
Saturday's free program will include speakers, poetry, storytelling, music, a black history book giveaway, video clips of programs that were an extension of the column and a display of past "Eye On History" articles. Light refreshments will follow.
