Buffalo defense lawyer honored by state bar group

Joseph M. LaTona, the Buffalo defense lawyer who took a tax evasion case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court and won, was honored earlier this month by the New York State Bar Association.

During a ceremony in Manhattan, LaTona received the Charles F. Crimi Memorial Award for outstanding work by a criminal defense lawyer.

The recognition followed LaTona's involvement in the defense of Carlo J. Marinello, a Buffalo small business owner convicted of evading income taxes and obstructing the Internal Revenue Service.

Upheld by a New York federal appeals court, Marinello's conviction was eventually overturned when the Supreme Court found the law that led to his conviction overly broad and subject to potential abuse by prosecutors.

The Supreme Court overturned a Buffalo man's conviction. But prosecutors tried to send him back to prison.
