Carter Verhaeghe scored his third goal of the game, 9 seconds into overtime Saturday night to give the Syracuse Crunch a 4-3 American Hockey League victory over the Rochester Americans before 6,527 at the Onondaga County War Memorial in Syracuse.
The hat trick gave the 23-year-old Verhaeghe 20 goals for the season. His second goal of the game tied the game at 3-3 with just 1:27 left in regulation. His first tied the game at 1-1 in the first period after Scott Wilson had opened the scoring for the Amerks.
Kyle Criscuolo of Rochester scored the only goal of the second period. Jan Rutta tied it for Syracuse just 36 seconds into the third. Brendan Guhle of the Amerks put his team back in front at 9:19 with assists from Victor Olofsson (his 23rd) and Danny O'Regan (his 12th). However, the Amerks were unable to hold off the crunch.
Adam Wilcox had 27 saves in goal for the Amerks including a penalty shot by former Canisius College star Cory Conacher in the third to protect a 3-2 Rochester lead. Connor Ingram had 22 saves for Syracuse.
With the win the Crunch (25-13-2-1) moved just three points in back of the first place Amerks (26-13-3-1) in the North Division of the AHL.
