Niagara River Greenway funds will pay to pave what is now a 15-foot-wide dirt and gravel trail along the route of a former railroad track in the Town of Lockport.
The committee that controls Greenway funds in Niagara County allocated $116,000 toward the $136,000 project Tuesday.
The 2,500-foot trail between Lockport and Murphy roads will connect to a trail in the former rail bed in Pendleton that ends at the Town of Lockport border on Lockport Road. The plan calls for a 2,800-foot second phase to be funded in the future, from Murphy Road to the City of Lockport border.
Town Supervisor Mark C. Crocker said the city has committed to an extension of the trail from the city line to the Erie Canalway Trail at Stevens Street.
