An Amherst woman is accused of fatally stabbing her boyfriend in the back early Monday.
Monica Carpenter, 31, of Amherst, is charged with first-degree manslaughter in the killing of 30-year-old Pedro Pizarro, the Erie County District Attorney's Office said early Tuesday afternoon.
Prosecutors say the killing took place in the early morning hours Monday inside their home on Callodine Avenue in Eggertsville.
Carpenter was arraigned Monday before Amherst Town Justice Kara Buscaglia and she is scheduled to return to court on Friday for a felony hearing. She remains held on $100,000 cash or bond.
She faces a maximum of 25 years in prison if convicted.
Amherst police did not report the killing on Monday.
Assistant Police Chief Charles Cohen said in a voicemail message that police did not finish notifying the next of kin of the victim until late Monday and he said the department in general limits how much it says about cases of domestic violence.
He said he would not elaborate beyond the news release issued by the District Attorney's Office.
Amherst Supervisor Brian Kulpa said he was told Erie County Child Protective Services has worked to place the children living in the home with relatives.
