New architectural board would advise on reuse of Amherst shopping centers

Amherst wants to set up an Architectural Review Board that would maintain design standards for redevelopment in the town's shopping centers.

The board is an outgrowth of zoning changes meant to allow mixed-use redevelopment in large retail plazas in the town's business districts along Niagara Falls Boulevard, Sheridan Drive, Main Street, Transit Road and elsewhere, Supervisor Brian Kulpa said.

The Architectural Review Board will assess proposed new construction and major renovation work in those centers and provide advice to the town's Planning Board. Kulpa said he would like to see architects and other professionals appointed to the new board.

Town officials are preparing the final language for the resolution establishing the new board, Kulpa said. A public hearing on the idea will take place on March 18.
