A Batavia man was charged with breaking into a Bergen gun shop and stealing 14 guns, according to U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy Jr.
Morgan R. Coles, 20, entered the Firing Pin on Buffalo Road through a roof vent Sept. 26, according to the federal complaint filed against him. Video surveillance shows him removing 14 firearms from a shelf, placing them in a bag and leaving through the range area of the store, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Genesee County Sheriff's deputies found 15 handguns at Coles' residence, including 14 that had obliterated serial numbers, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. The handguns match the descriptions of the weapons taken from the shop.
Coles was charged with stealing from a federal firearm licensee and possession of a defaced firearm. The charges carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
