A Florida man who admitted installing credit card skimmers at gas station pumps in Amherst, Lancaster and the Town of Tonawanda was sentenced to six months in jail, according to the Erie County District Attorney's Office.
Giraldo Cardenas, 36, of Homestead, Fla., installed the devices between July 14 to 25, prosecutors said.
A skimmer is a device that can be affixed to a debit or credit card reader in order to obtain banking information from victims. Cardenas used the information he gained from the devices to create fraudulent debit and credit cards, which were used to make purchases at retail outlets, prosecutors said.
Cardenas in September pleaded guilty to second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument and first-degree scheme to defraud.
