Jamie Miller of Silver Creek, playing on his home course, defeated Billy Hanes of Crag Burn Golf Club in the first playoff hole Sunday to win his second New York State Mid-Amateur Golf Championship at the Wanakah Country Club.
Miller parred the 433-yard 18th hole to win his second state Mid-Am title. He also won in 2014. Miller two-putted from 12 feet to win after his pin-high approach, He shot 1-under 71 on Sunday for a 217. Hanes, the second round leader, shot 75 for his 217.
Playing in the final threesome with Jim Scorse of the Stafford CC, Miller and Hanes each missed a chance to avoid the playoff on the final hole. Hanes had an opportunity to close out Miller with a 5-footer after Miller’s bogey, but couldn’t get the par putt to fall.
Miller and Hanes had three bogeys each on the front nine, but Miller rallied.
"I didn’t start very well …," Miller said. He was three over through six holes, then birdied Nos. 7 and 8 and lipped out a birdie putt on the ninth
"Alright, now I’m in it," he thought to himself, then birdied the 10th. He tied for the lead with a birdie on No. 17.
Hanes had only two birdies in Sunday’s round, on the 11th and 15th, and he took a double-bogey six on No. 14.
Scorce finished with a 73 for a final 218 to tie Patrick Nealon (Brierwood) for third place.
Of the other Western New York player who made it to the final round, Kyle Harman (Gowanda) had the best finish, a tie for 13th at 225 after a 71 on Sunday.
