Rebuffed beggar becomes violent, attacking pair outside store

A man and woman suffered black eyes Friday night after they turned down a beggar’s requests for cigarettes and beer, Niagara Falls Police reported.

While the woman bought beer inside the Hometown Market at 15th Street and Pierce Avenue about 7 p.m., the man was approached outside by another man asking for a cigarette. He told the beggar he had no smokes.

When the woman returned, the beggar asked for beer and was told to “go away,” police said. As the man bent down to put the beer into a backpack, the beggar kneed him in the left eye, knocking him to the ground. The woman tried to intervene and was punched in the eye.
