Billy Hanes of the Crag Burn Golf Club in East Aurora matched Saturday's best rounds with a 70 and took the lead with 18 holes to go in the 35th New York State Mid-Amateur at the Wanakah Country Club.
Hanes played the front nine at the lakeshore layout in Hamburg in 2-under 34 with birdies on the par-5 third hole and the par-4 eighth. Then he played the back nine even par, closing with a birdie on No. 18. That gave him a 36-hole total of 142.
Jim Scorse of Churchville, who plays out of the Stafford Country Club, stands second at 143 after his 72 on Saturday.
There's a four-way tie for third at 146. Among the four are first-round leader Kyle Downey (Lucust Hill) with 68-78-146 and Jamie Miller (Wanakah) 75-71-146.
Miller, who won this tournament in 2014, birdied the par-3 fourth hole and was 1-under 35 on the front nine. His back nine was more adventurous with two birdies and two bogeys, including a five on No. 18.
The field was cut to the low 30 scores plus ties. Besides Hanes, Miller and Nealon there are 10 other Western New York golfers left among the 34 who will tee off today.
