Buffalo's gig economy can add Amazon Flex to its repertoire.
Amazon has begun recruiting local independent contractors on Amazon.com's Flex landing page, where Buffalo is now listed among the more than 50 other cities where Amazon uses the program.
That means people in Western New York can sign up as independent contractors to pick up packages from the company's Lancaster warehouse and deliver them using their own cars.
It's sort of like an Uber for packages. Contractors download an app, pick up packages from an Amazon hub, then use the app to scan and deliver packages to the people who ordered them.
Because they're independent contractors and not employees, Amazon Flex drivers are not eligible for minimum wage, overtime or worker's compensation.
