A host of VIPs lauded Gary Crosby at an event hosted by KeyBank, but it was an eighth-grader who stole the show.
The occasion last week was the announcement of a $2 million donation by Key and the First Niagara Foundation in honor of Crosby to Say Yes Buffalo. Crosby is a former Buffalo schools official and a current Key board member.
Aubria Cooper, a student at North Park Middle Academy, stepped to the microphone and spoke confidently about what college means to her. She rattled off her list of activities: playing basketball, writing and performing poetry, running the student council, coaching the drill team, and trying to be fluent in American Sign Language by the end of the year.
"And, yes I do all of this and still maintain a 97 grade point average," she said. "No excuses."
Crosby was among the impressed: "If I was still working as CEO of First Niagara, I'd be offering Aubria a job right now."
