Sears' Eastern Hills Mall location will start a liquidation sale on Friday and close in mid-December – a week before Christmas and in the middle of the busy holiday shopping season.
Sears will close the store on Dec. 18, according to a notice filed with the state Department of Labor. The notice said 40 employees will be affected by the shutdown.
Howard Riefs, a Sears spokesman, said the chain has "accelerated the closing of unprofitable stores as previously announced."
The shutdown of the Eastern Hills Mall location will leave Sears with only one of its department stores in the Buffalo Niagara region, at the McKinley Mall in Hamburg. A location at the former Summit Mall complex in the Town of Wheatfield closed in August.
Most financially struggling stores try to hang on through the busy holiday shopping season to take advantage of the big uptick in seasonal buying before launching liquidation sales in January.
