The committee controlling Niagara River Greenway funding in Niagara County on Tuesday approved its second of three payments toward a set of 14 statues to be placed on the steps at the Erie Canal locks in Lockport. Four figures will be ready for installation next fall, Youngstown sculptor Susan Geissler said.
In all, the Greenway will cover $400,000 of the $1.2 million cost of life-size replicas of 13 canal lock tenders, based on an 1897 photo, plus a sculpture of the photographer who took the shot.
State and foundation funding is being sought to cover the remaining cost. David R. Kinyon, president of the Locks Heritage District Corp., said that when completed in 2021, the work will be "one of the largest pieces of public art in Western New York."
