Letter: Elderwood offers a positive patient experience for family

I have read so many negative letters regarding nursing home care, I feel I must share my positive experience.

My mother has been a resident of Elderwood at Amherst nursing home for almost four years. She is wheelchair bound and needs help with most of her needs.

I have always found the staff to be helpful and caring, no matter what Mom’s needs may be. She is treated with kindness, if she is in a bad mood, they joke with her or hug her, they have even brought her treats, such as pizza or fruits she likes. Her clothing always matches, her hair is combed and sometimes her nails are polished. I am always informed, by phone, of any changes in her condition or medications. Mom has told me many times she loves it there and how good they take care of her. There have been times when she has coins or trinkets in her room from bingo or games. Nothing is ever missing. The activities staff always tries to have her included in whatever is available that day.

If I do have any concerns, they are always taken care of. On occasion, I have spoken to the business office, nurses, aides, administration and maintenance personnel and have always had a positive outcome.

I feel very bad for the residents of other facilities whose bad experiences I have read about, but I have only very complimentary comments to make about Elderwood at Amherst.
