Dr. Thaddeus F. Reszel Jr., a physician in North Tonawanda for more than 35 years, died Sept. 20 in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst. He was 90.

Born in North Tonawanda, he was the oldest of four children and the son of a physician and school board member for whom the city’s middle school was named.

He was a graduate of North Tonawanda High School, the University at Buffalo and the UB Medical School.

He served his internship at Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, and did a residency in general practice at Millard Fillmore Hospital in Buffalo. There he met Alice Schneider, a registered nurse, and they were married in 1956.

Dr. Reszel then served in the Navy as a medical officer. Stationed in Bayonne, N.J., he attained the rank of lieutenant commander.

After his discharge, he received a staff appointment to DeGraff Memorial Hospital in North Tonawanda and began a private practice in his parents’ home on Wheatfield Street. He later had offices on Division Street, retiring in 1996.

Two of his brothers also became doctors. Robert, who died in 2014, was chief of staff at DeGraff Memorial Hospital for 20 years and president of the North Tonawanda School Board. Paul was an orthopedic surgeon in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Dr. Reszel enjoyed traveling and fishing. He created numerous models of ships and aircraft. He also was an opera lover, attending productions at Artpark and following live broadcasts of the Metropolitan Opera on the radio and in theaters.

An amateur magician and poet, he entertained his family and friends with card tricks and wrote special humorous poems at Christmas.

His wife died in 2005.

In addition to his brother, Paul, survivors include two daughters, Susan Hoelter and Mary Latona, a sister, Margaret Cegielski and four grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Monday, Sept. 24, in Our Lady of Czestochowa Catholic Church, 64 Center Ave., North Tonawanda.
