Lewiston wins funding for new riverfront town park

Lewiston will begin work next year on a 5.7-acre town park along the Niagara River.

A committee that controls Niagara River Greenway funds in Niagara County agreed Tuesday to pay the entire $700,000 cost.

The park will be located on town-owned land on Lower River Road, immediately north of the Western New York Land Conservancy's Stella Niagara Preserve and directly across the road from the town Senior Center.

Supervisor Steve Broderick said the park will have about 400 feet of river frontage. It is to be equipped with a floating dock, and the town is seeking state permission to install a kayak launch. Pavilions, picnic tables, grills and a bicycle and pedestrian path also will be featured.

Broderick said work will take 12 to 18 months to complete.
