The Lewiston Town Board voted unanimously Monday night to grant a permit for town Building Inspector Timothy Masters to lease part of his property on Swann Road for a commercial solar power installation.
Borrego Solar Systems of Lowell, Mass., will build the 16.5-acre, 5.3-megawatt solar farm at the back of Masters' land.
"It was something we didn't look at lightly," Supervisor Steve Broderick said.
To mollify objecting neighbors, trees and other "continuous live vegetation" must be planted on three sides of the solar project. The fourth side is already wooded. Masters will continue to rent 22 acres nearest the road to a farmer to plant corn or soybeans.
Broderick said the permit will not automatically transfer if Borrego's lease ends or Masters sells the land.
