Restaurant owner accused in Kenmore arson

A Kenmore restaurant owner was charged Monday with setting fire to his business in order to collect on insurance.

Mushtak al Mosaadi, owner of Babylon Gardens, 1141 Kenmore Ave., is accused of conspiring with Omran al-Khazraji to defraud the Erie Insurance Group out of $100,000.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Felicetta said the two men worked with an arsonist to set fire to the restaurant. He said the arsonist was prosecuted and convicted in state court.

The fire, according to court papers, occurred June 2, 2016, just days after al Mossadi obtained the insurance policy and then doubled its value. The restaurant had opened in April of that year, in a site previously called Torches.

The two men entered pleas of not guilty Monday.
