SWIFT, Robert S.

SWIFT - Robert S. Died Sunday, September 9, 2018 at Beechwood Nursing Home, Millersport Highway, Amherst. He was 95. Born in Manhattan on August 18, 1923, Bob grew up in St. Albans, NY and moved with his family to Kenmore in 1939. He graduated from Kenmore Senior High School in 1942 and then served in the Army from 1943 to 1945 during World War II. As a young Army medic in Burma, Bob treated gunshot wounds and jungle illnesses such as malaria and yellow fever. Bob was fascinated with the China-Burma-India theatre of World War II. He called it the "forgotten theatre" of the war, but saw more recognition given to the efforts of the American soldiers in that part of the world later in his life. Bob and the late Ruth M. Hyatt of Kenmore were married in 1949, shortly after his graduation from the University of Buffalo. He was employed as a purchaser at the General Motors Engine Plant for several decades until his retirement. A longtime Kenmore resident, he was a member of Kenmore United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, Robert (Judy) Swift, daughter Nancy (James) Irvine, grandchildren David and Brian (Kelly) Swift, Jennifer Irvine (Royce Stewart), Matthew (Amelia) Irvine, Michael (Penelope Rochelle) Irvine and great-grandchildren Reid Irvine, Sage Irvine and Bodie Irvine.
