Letter: Watson has it wrong about center’s mission

We wish to correct and clarify the information provided in a Rod Watson column Sept. 5. His report states that while New Life Residential Center Inc. (NLRC) at 24 Memorial Drive, in the Broadway Fillmore area remains open it no longer reflects its mission.

Our mission is as follows:

(NLRC) is a residential program that provides services to women who are experiencing issues associated with homelessness, addiction, mental health and domestic violence. Our mission is to encourage, educate and empower women to function at their maximum potential. We firmly believe that in doing so they must be able to “shed old behaviors and boldly embrace new” in order to return to society as productive members. We have continued under this same mission since July 1, 1997.

He also stated that NLRC was forced to close its residential component and are only offering outpatient counseling and this is also untrue.

Our present and future plans for phase II of our organizational development includes: meeting with Council Member Ulysees O. Wingo on Sat., Oct. 13 at 8:30 a.m., at the Delavan Moselle Community Center. Our purpose is to present our plans to build affordable housing in the Masten District.

Even though we have had to seek funding and donations from other sources, we have been blessed to continue to keep our doors open.
