High School Extra: Lockport boys volleyball wins Sweet Home Invitational

Lockport defeated Clarence Saturday afternoon to win the Sweet Home Boys' Volleyball Invitational. The Lions won the final, 25-23, 25-15. They advanced with a win over host Sweet Home, 25-21, 25-17. Clarence defeated Hamburg, 25-22, 25-19, in the semis.

Zach Schneider of Lockport was named the tournament MVP with teammates Rhees Perry and Sean Denniston named to the All-Tournament team. Also receiving all-tourney honors were Bo Johnson (Hamburg), Dylan Aarum (Sweet Home), Jackson Wurtz (Clarence), and Teddy Payne (Clarence).

Boys soccer shutouts

Shutouts were in good supply around Section VI on Saturday.

Dario Tringali scored for Williamsville North in its win over Frontier. The Spartans improved to 2-4 in ECIC I play, handing Frontier just its second league loss this season.

Matt Brown had two goals and two assists as Maryvale blanked Pioneer, 5-0, in ECIC III. Blake Borycki and Alex Raczynski each had a goal and an assist while Matt Wrzos also scored for the Flyers (5-1).

Also in ECIC III, Bailey Ertel and Alec Cimini each scored for Iroquois (4-3) in a 2-0 win over Cheektowaga. Jonathan Putney scored twice for undefeated East Aurora (7-0) in a 10-0 win over Lake Shore.

In ECIC II, Benita Vilardo scored three as Williamsville South (5-5) blanked West Seneca East, 7-0.

Alex Taylor scored for Tonawanda in a 1-0 win over Eden as the Warriors improved to 10-1 overall and 7-0 in ECIC IV play.

In the Niagara Frontier League, Reilly Boyer scored in overtime to give Lockport (5-3) a 1-0 win over Kenmore. Michael Ranieri scored three times for Niagara Falls (3-2) in a 5-0 win over North Tonawanda.

In CCAA West action, Olean improved to 5-1 overall with a 1-0 win over Fredonia thanks to a goal from Jarrett Prizel.

Sheehan nets shutout

Megan Sheehan recorded eight saves and Natalie Karmazyn scored the lone goal for Akron (6-2) in a 1-0 win over Newfane in Niagara-Orleans league girls soccer.

Wilson improved to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in Niagara-Orleans girls play with a 3-0 win over Barker. Leia Cloy had a goal and two assists for the Lakewomen while Skyler Munnikhuysen had a goal and an assist. Isabella Lemke recorded the shutout.

Milne scores four

Natalie Milne scored four goals to pace City Honors in a 9-0 win over McKinley in a Radcliffe Cup girls soccer match. Ava Purks had a goal and two assists, Mackenzie Milne a goal and an assist, while Mary Grace Glavey had three assists. City Honors remained undefeated, moving to 7-0 overall, 4-0 in league.

In other Radcliffe Cup action, Amari Burch scored six goals and Tennyah Martin three in a 9-1 win for Middle Early College (2-1) over South Park.

McLaughlin wins East Aurora Invite

Freshman Megan McLaughlin of East Aurora won her school’s cross country meet in a commanding fashion.

McLaughlin finished the 3-mile course at the East Aurora Invitational in 17:48.15, well ahead of her teammate and second-place finisher junior Karis Ertel, who ran an 18:33.83.

Caitlin O'Rourke, a senior from Orchard Park, was third in 18:47.09.

East Aurora won the team event, followed by Orchard Park and Frontier.

Gugino goes over 100 kills

Daniella Gugino had nine kills for Mount St. Mary in a three-game sweep of Bishop Kearney in a non-league girls volleyball matchup. Gugino now has more than 100 kills this season. Sam Hare added 17 digs in the 25-11, 25-15, 25-18 win as Mount St. Mary improved to 7-1 overall.
