Niagara County Legislature Majority Leader Randy R. Bradt said Wednesday that even though a motion to eliminate the county public information officer post was defeated, 10-4, at Tuesday's meeting, there's no assurance the vacant job will be included in the 2019 budget.
"We're going to take a long, hard look at it – the duties of the position, the pay," said Bradt, R-North Tonawanda.
The four Democratic legislators have long sought to eliminate the post, from which Christian W. Peck resigned in early August. The county manager's administrative assistant, Joanna M. Marble, said she would handle media duties, but she has issued no news releases.
"It's $117,000 (including benefits) we're saving the taxpayers for a patronage job we've proving we don't need," said Legislator Jason A. Zona, D-Niagara Falls.
